1993 was a great year for bike culture: messenger bags were all the rage among NYC high schoolers, the inaugural Cycle Messenger Championships took place in Berlin, Germany…and FREITAG was founded. Brothers Daniel and Markus Freitag wanted a messenger bag that was water resistant, but were unable to find anything that fitted their needs. They decided to repurpose old truck tarps to create their own, and the F13 TOP CAT bag was born. From that first messenger bag, FREITAG has grown to selling over 500,000 products annually, repurposed from over 440 tons of used truck tarps.
In celebration of 1993, the New Museum Store and FREITAG presents R.I.P.* Since 1993 (*Recycled Individual Products), a unique pop-up within the New Museum Store window. For this experiential pop-up, a special edition of ninety-three FREITAG F13 TOP CAT bags will be sold to benefit the New Museum. Each edition will contain the catalogue from the Museum’s “NYC 1993” exhibition, a signed copy (by both Daniel and Markus Freitag) of Out of the Bag (a book about the design and history of FREITAG), plus a special bookmark made from leftover truck tarp during the production of FREITAG bags.
